What I liked

Interaction with students, and running fun activities. Rewarding to see students learn and express their interests.

What I wish was different

Would’ve liked to be provided with a better lesson plan, and more resources in terms of example projects to introduce.

Advice

It’s incredibly rewarding and fun, but be prepared for very little free time.

Video Production Instructor

June - July 2018 • Montclair, NJ

What I liked

I liked how the rewarding the experience was. The feedback I received from my students made the stress of the job worthwhile. The job had a very professional feel and I gained lots of teaching experience as well as experience working with kids of multiple ages.

What I wish was different

I wish the curriculum wasn't jam-packed into a short week, but more spread out. I also wish my specific camp site had more staff, because I was the only one teaching video production and it was the five of us running a camp with 50+ kids a week

Advice

Make sure you know what's expected of you in terms of what you need to teach. Learn what you have to beforehand so that you're prepared when you have an audience.

iD Tech Camp Instructor

June - August 2018 • Stony Brook, NY

What I liked

Getting to share my knowledge with students who were new to the field was a fun challenge and being able to spark interest in a field that I love felt very fresh and rewarding.

What I wish was different

The supplies we had at our disposal was scarce at times and we often had to make accommodations for the events happening on campus; there could have been more coordination with us from the school.

Advice

Expect to have to learn something new, whether its technical, social, or emotional.

Instructor

June - August 2018 • Pasadena, CA

What I liked

I got to work with some incredible coworkers and a great boss, and really enjoyed the sense of fun and unique atmosphere of the iD Tech camp.

What I wish was different

It can always be a little frustrating to work with children, and I would have liked to earn more money.

Advice

Make sure you're prepared to function in both a class and camp environment, and that you're prepared to put together your lesson plans (the more in-depth the better)

Instructor

June - August 2018 • Houston, TX

What I liked

I enjoyed getting to show the kids how “boring” stuff like coding can allow them to create and alter fun video games.

What I wish was different

I wish a few of my students had been a bit better behaved, but as a whole the group wasn’t bad.

Advice

It was definitely entertaining but at times exhausting. Especially with younger kids, the job involves a lot more supervising/babysitting than teaching.

Instructor

May - July 2018 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

I liked the staff and the resources. The job was also very rewarding because it involves passing your knowledge of STEM onto kids.

What I wish was different

I wish that there was better management on the corporate level, because the course that was written for my class was broken and had to be completely redone. The extra work I had done didn't get me more pay.

Advice

If you're debating whether or not to join iD, definitely do it because it's a very unique experience.

What I liked

First things first - the team was great. Working at iD Tech immediately puts you in contact with people who share your passions, and you build a great peer group. Plus, your coworkers are great networking opportunities for after camp. Working with kids kept every day interesting, and brought quite a lot of hope for the future. These bright young minds made this job so rewarding, and brought plenty of heartwarming moments. Camp was a blast every day. iD Tech was great at caring for its employees, and would be adaptable to employee needs. I loved the classes I taught, too.

What I wish was different

There were a lot of extra hours that went into this job that went unaccounted for - debugging projects after hours, or cleaning up, or meetings - but going above and beyond was also my own choice. Of course, summer camp can always be hectic, so more structure to keep on base with my managers would have been helpful. Yes, the job can be stressful. It would have been nice to have an extra staff member (Technology Coordinator) to help around camp.

Advice

Don't be afraid to speak up and ask for what you need - the job can be a lot with business and chaos, but the regional managers are wonderful about making transfers, understanding if you need a week off, switching course schedules, everything. Our regional manager personally bought one coworker a fridge to supplement the already generous housing package because she needed to store her medicine in a dorm that otherwise had no refrigerator. These people care, and are generous in a wide variety of ways if not with the paycheck.
