What I liked

The internship spans over most of the work involved in both construction and construction management. It's quite intensive and constrains you to, typically, one job site, but the internship will definitively show you whether construction management work is right for you.

What I wish was different

Your assigned mentor will rarely go out of their way to teach you the in's and out's of the job. Make sure to consistently reach out to bond with your mentor, as they will more likely be too busy to do so. and be proactive in finding new opportunities for yourself in the workspace.

Advice

Most construction/project managers are highly old-fashioned. They much prefer printed documents and manually use Microsoft Excel rather than utilize the built-in shortcuts. Have both the patience to sit through painfully long meetings and also suggest more efficient Excel commands/templates.

What I liked

I liked how diverse the group was in Corpus Christi and being able to work with someone different everyday.

What I wish was different

As with any construction project there can be some slow days. I wish I could have been kept busier during my time on the project.

Advice

Internships are a great opportunity to work on communication skills. Also, ask your boss for a mid-internship review to see how you can improve for the second half of the internship.

What I liked

I am working in my area of study, and have to learn new skills daily. My work also functions best when I collaborate and communicate with my fellow coworkers.

What I wish was different

This job is on the largest construction project underway in the United States, with that comes a lot of work to keep track of information and the ever changing dynamic of the job and construction process.

Advice

If you have no requirements to stay in a certain location, and nothing keeping you near home. Apply to jobs everywhere. You may discover something exciting even in places where you might not think you would like to be. Many employers like applicants who are up for an adventure and willing to uproot themselves for an opportunity.

I liked that I had flexible hours if I really needed it and wasn’t in a very specific clock in/out tone schedule.

What I wish was different

I wish I had a different mentor, he really ruined a lot of the experience for me, but my other co-workers were great.

Advice

Be diligent about keeping them accountable for communication with you before your internship. Keep asking what project you will be on so you can plan for housing and such.

What I liked

The responsibility and ongoing work to be done. Seeing new things onsite in the construction industry gave me a lot of insight on how heavy civil is operated.

What I wish was different

Having a better work life balance.

Advice

It is a great career path if taken seriously. You will be rewarded heavily and have a great sense of pride from completing jobs. I would recommend this job to others.
