Business Analyst

June - August 2018 • McLean, VA

What I liked

I loved the people I worked with. All of them were kind and helpful. I learned a lot throughout the summer and had a lot of fun doing so.

What I wish was different

The new headquarters building had opened a bit earlier.

Advice

If you have the opportunity, take it. I had one of my most fun summers, learned a ton, made more money that I felt I had business making, and gained confidence to adapt to any situation. I can’t speak highly enough of my time at Capital One.

Software Engineer Intern

June - August 2018 • Richmond, VA

What I liked

Capital One had a great company culture that placed software engineering at the core of its business, as opposed to a support component. The campus was beautiful and I had a chance to work in the Center for Machine Learning contributing meaningful work and gain experience with a wide variety of technologies.

What I wish was different

My only complaint was that since the Capital One office is in the Richmond suburbs, you have to have a car to get around. If not, you have to find someone to car pool with the whole summer. It would have been nice if some kind of shuttle service had been provided.

Advice

Capital One may not sound like a tech company, but the CEO clearly sees technology as the future of the company. Thus, there is very little of the bureaucracy in software development that is found at most other banks.

Software enginerring intern

What I liked

Felt just like a tech company, with an open workspace and lots of perks. Upper management pushes strongly to use new technologies.

What I wish was different

I didnt like Richmond very much.

Capital One's reputation within the tech community is rapidly accelerating. Some people choose C1 over other well-established tech companies for this reason!

Customer Security Intake Reporting Intern

June - August 2018 • St. Cloud, MN

What I liked

I had a lot of autonomy with this internship which really gave me the chance to grow. I also got to work side by side with a lot of the workers and experience their job first hand so that I could find ways to improve their day to day experience and provide helpful solutions for the company.

What I wish was different

A lot of my job consisted of speaking over Skype or video calling to the other branch in North Carolina and so it would’ve been nice to have a laptop so that I could have important business calls in meeting rooms instead of at my desk.

Advice

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes! It’s the mistakes that help you grow and improve and you’ll value your work so much more cause you will know how much work and effort you put into it.

Business Analytics Intern

June - August 2018 • McLean, VA

What I liked

Capital One's Analyst Intern Program is extremely well designed - they have a lot of programming to teach interns about all of the various lines of business, teams, and roles available! On top of that, the program is huge so there are a ton of opportunities to get to know people from other schools that you could one day be working with. My manager and mentor were amazing, and have stayed in touch throughout the semester.

What I wish was different

n/a

Advice

Get to know the other interns, it makes the summer 100x better!

Commercial Banking Intern

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

My internship experience at Capital One was incredible. Throughout the summer, executives from all over the company held speaker sessions to speak with the 25 interns in the commercial banking program. Additionally, the CEO, Rich Fairbank, spoke to the entirety of Capital One's interns for two hours at their headquarters in person. These speaker series highlighted Capital One's dedication t to their interns as well as the company's inviting culture. Throughout the summer, I was encouraged to speak to as many people in the firm as possible, and employees were always willing to set a time to have a coffee chat and talk about their work. The leadership is great and I was always given work that was interesting and furthered my understanding of the business.

What I wish was different

The programming staff was unorganized sometimes especially with travel and instructions.

Advice

Do not be afraid to talk to people and show interest in the company. They are looking for bright and talented individuals that want to be there.
