Advice

If you feel board or are being limited by the scope of the work you are doing; ask. Ask them to increase your workload or ask if you can help them with their work framing it in a way which shows the benefit to them. It works.

Summer Analyst

June - August 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The experience was very informative and helpful for me in my personal career growth.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship was not remote and to experience the internship in person. However, BNY Mellon did a phenomenal job making the other interns feel welcome and creating a great summer program.

Advice

Put yourself out there as much as possible and say yes to everything. The more exposure and people you can meet the better you will be when the firm is looking to extend return offers.

Accounting Analyst Intern

June - August 2015 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

I like the job mentorship, being available for the next project, and the fun activities with interns (volunteering and Pittsburgh Pirates ball game)

What I wish was different

I was doing mostly the same tasks every day, so I was hoping to work in more than 1 department, though my supervisor allowed me to work in another division for a day.

Advice

Take notes on the first day. At the end of your internship, develop those notes into a final edition and pass it on to the next intern in the department.

Performance Analyst Intern

January - December 2019 • Tacoma, WA

What I liked

The work atmosphere was great. I was able to approach each and every person within the office. Everyone in the office was extremely welcoming of the interns and would help us if we ever ran into any kinds of problems.

What I wish was different

The ability to work on longer-range projects with more impact for the office. There was a lot of repetition within this role, so its really up to you to seek out new tasks and projects.

Advice

Ask every possible question you can think of. Do not be afraid of making mistakes.

Human Resource Summer Analyst

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The independence I was given in completing my project. My manager made herself available if I needed any help with my regular deadlines, but gave me space and trusted that I would be able to complete them.

What I wish was different

Advice

Networking is seriously a huge part of success in the business world. I made it a goal to set up meetings with at least three new people a week so I could expand my network and learn as much as I could about the bank. I firmly believe that doing this was an instrumental step in receiving my return offer for after I graduate. Forcing myself out of my comfort zone and meeting new people ended up really paying off.

March 2017 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

The exposal to the corporate industry and how it functions at a daily level.

What I wish was different

More modernization. Very traditional in terms of professional atmosphere.

Advice

Do it. You won't know what you like until you try it and if it's not to you're liking, that in itself is a silver lining = you know what you don't like.

Full-Stack Software Engineer

May - August 2018 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

I learned many industry technologies that are not explicitly taught in most University courses. The environment was similar to how Google is viewed, many perks and relatively laid back.

What I wish was different

Although I learned many new technologies, I wish there had been more work pertaining to inventing new solutions to problems using custom data structures and algorithms.

Advice

Prepare to develop code in a completely different way from what you are used to. Most requirements for industry projects are much different than what you would expect from an assignment in a University course.

Securities Shared Services Summer Analyst

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Allowed for a fantastic amount of networking, which was important because I was hoping to change divisions upon returning. Also allowed for me to learn quite a bit about custody banking, which is rarely taught in school.

What I wish was different

Was not the original division that I had hoped for, nor interviewed for. I took the opportunity that was presented because it was new and I really liked BNYM, though I did not end up loving the area I was in. However, I was able to pivot out of that division and into one that was more suited for me.

Advice

Always look to network both within and outside of your group. This can be especially important in large organizations because it affords you the opportunity to learn about other areas, as well has the flexibility to pivot your career path into other parts of the same organization should you want to do so.

I wish that I was located in a bigger city, so that I would've been surrounded by more interns.

Data Analyst Intern

June - August 2019 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

The work atmosphere was amazing and they gave me meaningful work that actually applied to things that were going on in the company. Through the internship program I got to hear and sit-in on meetings and presentation with company leaders from all over the world and to hear their unique perspectives on what they've learned throughout the years.

What I wish was different

While my work was meaningful, it did't directly apply to what I was looking to do as a data analyst and mainframe programmer.

Advice

Talk to as many people as you can! BNY Mellon does an excellent job of opening multiple doors to help you meet and network with people from all over the company.

The people at BNY Mellon are the best. Everyone is very willing to help you both in the internship and beyond.
