Entrance Screener

July 2020 • Whitefish Bay, WI

What I liked

I love the work environment. This job not only allows students to gain medical experience but also increases ones ability to talk to strangers in a successful way. Being an Entrance Screener means I check in and talk to every person that enters the clinic and therefore this job has allowed me to exponentially increase my awareness of the medical field and also my ability to successfully interact with patients.

What I wish was different

My only complaint about this job is that there is no formal training on conflict resolution. We often have to face the wrath of anti-maskers and conspiracy theorists that fight us on our policies. Over time, I have learned how to handle these situations but I feel like I would have been more successful if we were given training on it.

Advice

My best piece if advice is to take everything with a grain of salt. The medical field is notorious for angry, entitled patients that will and do treat you as the bad guy. Ive only worked here for about 5 months and I've already had countless experiences with patients attacking me and my coworkers out of frustration. However, this is also met with people who have so much respect and appreciation for healthcare workers and they make all the negativity worth it.

Transition Support Program Intern

August 2020 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

Through this opportunity, I was able to connect with patients and help them overcome barriers to healthcare. I have learned in much more detail, the problems that still need to be resolved concerning the relationship between insurance and healthcare. I have worked with some patients for months now, guiding through outpatient care, some for the first time. Through this experience I have developed strong customer service skills and efficient problem solving skills to reach as many patients as necessary.

What I wish was different

Due to the pandemic, the internship is running virtually which is still an amazing experience. However, it would have been an interesting comparative lens to do similar work in the hospital based setting.

Hospital Volunteer

June - August 2018 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

What I wish was different

Advice

The process to begin volunteering took longer than I orginally expected. Before you begin your first independent shift, there is paperwork, health check(s), a general orientation, an orientation on your site depending on where you will be volunteering, and shadowing someone who has been in that role for some time. Between the number of requirements needed before you begin and scheduling them, prepare for there to be some time needed between when you initially show interest in volunteering and when you actually start.

Food Service Worker

June 2019 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

I like that this hospital is always growing and we meet a lot of different people. Everyone is super friendly and will give help when asked for. Holidays and weekends are rotated and it is usually easy to find coverage when needed.

What I wish was different

The hiring process is kind of long due to different tests and orientation. It takes about 3 weeks to officially be hired.

Advice

I recommend to be very open minded towards people and be aware of things going on around you. You have to walk a lot also, so I would recommend having comfortable shoes. You should be adaptable to change because the hospital is constantly implementing new things in areas where it is felt needs improvements.
