Corporate Planning and Development Intern

June - August 2021 • Oakdale, MN

What I liked

I was able to use my skills that I have learned in the classroom and apply it to real world situations.

What I wish was different

It was a virtual internship for the most part so it was a bit difficult to connect with team members.

Advice

It is great to get finance experience at a financial services firm and understand what goes into the strategy of the company.

Finance Associate and Practice Management

June 2018 • La Vista, NE

What I liked

The best experiences working as an intern during the summer were the department shadowing, lunch-ins with the executive teams of each department and Securities America, and paid series exams. Shadowing each department opened the world of finance. I have now seen each and every aspect of finance including Supervision, Compliance, Securites America Advisors , and so many more. The lunch-ins with the executive teams helped with understanding how to create a pathway to joing any of the departments I had shadowed and how the management side of the deparments works. Lastly, the paid FINRA series exams is a huge plus. Securites America is always open to increase their employees' desire to develope themselves further, which is why they offer to pay for any of the FINRA series exams.

Advice

Even though the series exams are difficult and long, there is nothing to lose by taking them. Take the time to study and take the exams because it will help you tremendously in the finance world.

Representative Relations Intern

June - August 2018 • Omaha, NE

What I liked

I enjoyed being able to meet with departments across the whole company to learn how all of the departments work together and how their tasks differ. It helped me relate my work as an intern in my specific department to how it benefitted the entire company.

What I wish was different

We were give a lot of shadow opportunities but I wish that I spent more time shadowing certain departments that I was interested in.

Advice

I advise students to look for internship/career exploration opportunities as early as they can so that they can figure out what they do and don't like. This is helpful in narrowing down the job opportunities you are interested in after graduation.
